【뉴욕=뉴시스】노창현 특파원 = 한글날을 선포하는 미국 학교들이 줄을 잇고 있어 비상한 관심을 모으고 있다.뉴욕주 웨스트체스터카운티의 답스페리 하이스쿨은 5일(이하 현지시간) “오는 7일을 한글날로 지정하고 한글과 관련된 행사를 하겠다”고 밝혔다.

또한 브루클린의 142초등학교는 8일을 한글날로 지정했으며 플러싱의 JHS189 중학교가 9일 한글날을 맞아 한글날을 선포한다고 발표했다. 플러싱의 PS150 초등학교도 한글날 이벤트에 동참의사를 밝혔다.

또 동서국제학학교의 학생들도 한글날 이벤트를 펼치는 것을 비롯, 뉴욕 뉴저지 일원의 주말 한국학교들도 크고작은 한글날 행사를 계획하고 있다.

이와 관련, 뉴욕 일원의 한국어 라디오방송인 KRB(대표 권영대)가 본국의 KBS의 협조를 얻어 1800장의 한글옷을 이들 학교에 공급해 ‘한글날 한글옷 입기 운동’을 펼친다는 계획이다.

미 동부의 유일한 24시간 한국어방송인 KRB는 KBS가 추진하는 한글옷입기 운동에 적극 동참하는 뜻에서 한글교육에 관심을 두는 학교들과 접촉한 결과 정식으로 한글날을 선포하는 결실로 이어지게 됐다고 밝혔다.

한글과 한국문화를 거의 모르던 이 학교에 ‘한류 현상’이 불게 된 것은 이 학교의 이기동(미국명 Keith Yi) 교장덕분이다. 이기동 교장은 4년 전 뉴욕주 업스테이트 공립학교 최초의 아시안 교장으로 임명, 스포트라이트를 받았다.

백인과 유태계 교장들이 철옹성을 쌓던 이 지역에서 탁월한 교육행정가로 신선한 바람을 일으킨 그의 노력에 힘입어 답스페리 하이스쿨은 뉴스위크가 매년 전국 3만여개 공립학교를 대상으로 선정하는 전국 1000개 톱고교중 랭킹 50위 권을 유지하고 있다.
