2006년 12월에도 미국 참전용사의 미망인 A(83) 씨가 유엔기념공원을 방문, 남편과 같이 묻히고 싶다며 결혼증명서 등을 남기고 갔다.

유엔기념공원측은 남편이 전사한뒤에도 수절하며 자식들을 훌륭히 키워낸 미망인 3명이 2001년과 2002년, 2005년에 각각 남편과 함께하고 싶다는 유언에 따라 남편의 묘에 합장된 전례를 들어 A 씨의 요청이 받아들여질 가능성이 높은 것으로 보고 있다.

25일에는 재향군인회에서 주최하는 ’UN 전몰용사 추모제’, 29일에는 한국기독교총연합회 참배행사, 7월 2일에는 참전국 청소년 평화캠프단 참배행사가 각각 열린다.

유엔기념공원 박은정 홍보과장은 “한 해 참배객 25만명이 방문하고 있으며 이중 10%에 해당하는 2만5천여명이 외국인”이라며 “참전국은 물론이고 참전하지 않은 나라의 장병들도 부산을 방문하면 꼭 한번 씩 들러 참배하고 간다”고 말했다.

박 과장은 “칠레의 경우 참전국이 아니지만 칠레 해군이 부산을 찾을 때 유엔기념공원 내 프랑스군 묘역에 묻힌 칠레계 프랑스인의 묘를 참배하고 있다”고 덧붙였다.

이 처럼 유엔 연합국의 전사자 유해가 안장된 세계 유일의 유엔군 묘지인 유엔기념공원은 1951년 4월 개장한 이후 반세기가 흐르면서 전쟁의 참혹함과 평화의 소중함을 느끼게 하는 ’평화의 성지’로 거듭나고 있다.
