이처럼 수천 년 전부터 이집트의 종교적 건축물이자 국가적 보물인 오벨리스크는 해외 각국의 약탈자들에 의해 빼앗기고 말았다. 그리고 그들은 마치 자기 나라의 문화 유산인 양 당당하게 세워 놓았다.





오벨리스크는 자국의 권력 과시용?

그런데 여러 나라들이 이집트의 유물을 세워놓고 마치 자국의 상징인 양 뽐내는 이유는 무엇일까? 먼저는 식민지 쟁탈에서 성공했다는 자국의 위세를 과시하기 위해서다. 그리고 오벨리스크가 태양신의 상징이었던 만큼 승리와 영광, 최고의 권력을 나타낸다고 믿었기 때문에 자국의 광장에 세워둠으로써 다른 나라들보다 더 우월하다는 것을 암시하고 있는 것이다.



오벨리스크의 원 소유국인 이집트나 옛 이집트의 판도였던 아프리카 여러 국가들이 빼앗긴 오벨리스크에 대해 반환 요구를 하고 있지만 되찾은 사례가 드문 이유도 이러한 서구 열강들의 얼토당토않은 욕심 때문이다. 일례로 이탈리아는 에티오피아와 수십 년 동안 오벨리스크를 두고 분쟁을 벌여 왔다. 과거 무솔리니 정권 시절에 에티오피아를 침공한 이탈리아는 악슘에 세워져 있던 오벨리스크를 강제로 빼앗아 로마의 콜로세움 맞은편 유엔식량농업기구(FAO) 건물 앞에 세웠던 것이다. 이 오벨리스크는 1700년의 역사를 가지고 있는 것으로, 에티오피아로서는 선뜻 양보할 수 없는 유물이었다. 결국 에티오피아의 끈질긴 반환 요구에 지난 1998년 이탈리아는 반환에 합의했으나, 이후에도 에티오피아와 에리트레아 간의 국경 분쟁 등을 빌미로 실행을 미뤄 왔다. 결국 지난해 7월부터 이탈리아가 실질적인 반환 절차에 착수함에 따라 오벨리스크를 둘러싼 양국의 분쟁은 일단락되었다.



그러나 세계에는 아직도 반환되지 않은 채 마치 자국의 유물인 양 세워놓은 오벨리스크가 더 많다.

고대 이집트 사람들은 오벨리스크를 태양광선처럼 생겼다는 등의 이유로 태양신을 형상화한 것이라고 믿었지만 지금의 사람들은 오벨리스크가 태양처럼 빛나는 권력을 상징한다고 믿는다. 세월이 지나고 오벨리스크가 서 있는 장소는 각각 다르지만, 어쩌면 태양신을 빙자하여 권력을 과시하려는 원래의 건설 목적은 변함이 없는 듯하다
